论文简介:

Cooperation is essential for tackling major societal challenges, and extensive research shows that longer expected interaction durationsthe"shadow of te future"enhance cooperative behavior. Yet most studies assume that cooperation yields equal benefits for all parties, even though unequal gains are common in real-world interactions.Howthis"shadow of inequality"affects cooperation in indefinitely repeated settings remains unclea Across three experiments,we examine how inequality shapes cooperation, gradualism, and responsiveness to increased continuation probabilities.Study1 shows that when mutual cooperation produces unequal payoffs, behavior closely mirrors that in payoff-equivalent symmetric settings, suggesting limited influence of inequality concerns.Study2 finds that introducing a medum contrbution level fosters gradualism and cooperation in symmetric games, but in asymmericnvironments iequality ndermines ths steppig-stone mechanism and makes cooperation more fragile.Study3reveals adifferentdynamic:wheninequality stems from mutual defection rater tan cooperation, cooperationis drivenby how unattractive defectionis and may even be enhanced by inequality.Togethertheseresults clary whenand how inequality matters in repeated interactions. They demonstrate that the effects of inequality depend on its source and the strategic context, offering new insight into cooperationin environments with heterogeneous gains
